Santorini, Here We Come!
The big reveal is finally here: The next destination for The Wanderlust, our super-chic subscription box, is Santorini. The Greek isle is heralded as one of the world's most gorgeous places, and for good reason: From every angle, it's as pretty as a postcard. Prettier, actually — those whitewashed, curving staircases and the fuchsia bougainvillea provide the ulimate contrast against the azure blue sea and sky. Nestled in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is the ultimate getaway for explorers and leisure-seekers alike.
You've no doubt seen images of the sunsets — they're legendary. Flaming orange, they light up the white villages that cling to the red cliffs, drawing visitors from all over the globe who are angling for the perfect snapshot of the sinking sun. But Santorini is far more than just a pretty face, which is why we've dedicated an edition of The Wanderlust to this Grecian paradise.
We've made our past selections (Bali, The Hamptons, Rio de Janiero) based on their perfect mix of fantasy beaches, gorgeous surroundings and vibrant culture. Santorini is no exception, with a strong cultural heritage (Greece is the birthplace of civilzation, after all), a delicious food scene that includes world-renowned wine, buzzy nightlife and, of course, those gorgeous black sand beaches and the luxe pools that dot the cliffside hotels. Bikini babes seeking out sun, salty air and plenty of gorgeous Insta opps need look no further — but once you dive a bit deeper, you realize that the soul of Santorini is just as magical as its incredible views. While Greek islands like Mykonos are known for their non-stop party scenes, this island can help you tune out — ideal, if you ask us.
Want the lay of the land? First things first: where to stay. The main towns on Santorini are Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli, and they offer a host of gorgeous hotels to check in to, most with breathtaking caldera views and vertiginous staircases that wind their way from the main roads. Plunge pools and chic terraces make making the most of the outdoor life practically an obligation. Our pick is the Katikies hotel in Oia, with a pure white design that lets the beauty of the sea and landscape dominate.
Once you're settled, create an itinerary that mixes history with modern-day luxury, fresh taverna dishes, and active endeavors with ample chill time. Historical sites like the Profitis Ilias monastery, atop the island's highest point, and the ruins of Akrotiri of Thera are must-sees, and take a breather at Atlantis Books in Oia, which also hosts late-night al fresco movie screenings on its terrace. Oenophiles will absolutely want to tour Boutari Winery, where traditional sweet vinsanto is bottled, along with modern roses and crisp, mineral whites. If you're looking for more adventure, ride a donkey along trails that connect the hilltop towns or zip down to sea level in a cable car to go cliff-diving or swim in the sulphuric lagoon of the caldera.
After a siesta and an iced frappe, you'll be ready to take on Santorini's nightlife. Kira Thira is the oldest bar in town, and the place to head for an eclectic mix of tunes and types. Koo Club is where the hip young things watch the sunrise, and Enigma, a cavernous club with a chroma-colored light scheme, also offers a serious dose of dancing till dawn. Just one day in Santorini can bring things full circle — from a sun-drenched breakfast to ouzo shots at dawn, this place thrums with an energy that's absolutely addictive, and very difficult to leave.
