Our In-House Expert on the Perfect Sunnies

Our in-house expert, the Bikini Whisperer, is here to guide readers through their trickiest swimwear (and sunglass-centric) questions. Got a question of your own? Drop us a line!

Today's question:

Hi Bikini Whisperer,

Shopping online for sunglasses is tricky — but I desperately need a pair and could use a basic selection guideline. I'm not sure if my face is considered round or heart-shaped. How do you figure out which sunglass frame works best?

XO, Sunnie

Hi Sunnie,

Typically we can all play with different frame shapes, but some tend to work better than others depending on your features and face structure.

If you have a round face — which tends to be softer, with an overall circular shape — opt for sharp angular sunglasses. Stay away from roundies and lean toward anything with notably straight edges — like the squared-off wayfarer below.

An oval face, with a narrow chin line, looks best with aviators. Choose thin metal frames to keep it all proportional — you don't want to appear forehead heavy.  If you'd like to make a statement, go for reflective lenses — but be mindful of the size. Going too large will widen your top half.

Roundies are super fun, and look great on a square face. In fact, if your jawline is your most dominant feature, medium circle frames will soften your features.

The trending cat-eye shades we all adore work great with heart-shaped faces. If your chin is the narrowest face point, choose frames that are thicker at the top half or lift up at the outer angles.
