Miami Swimweek Review: Maaji
Maaji's 2016 collection may have been titled "Rhapsody Road," but the focus was as much on hitting the gym as hitting the open highway: The show opened with activewear, designed by Andrea Gomez, and featured models toting jump ropes and doing bicep curls with a pair of handweights. Made to work for a variety of sports, the leggings, tanks, sports bras and more were exactly what you'd expect from Maaji: fun and bright, with pops of lemon-yellow and dashes of metallics — this section contained our favorite piece in the entire show, a silver bag that from a distance looked half messenger bag, half duffle. Must. Have.
Of course, the swimwear was the star of the show, and presumably the chief draw for the beach lifestyle stars who filled the front row: Members of the casts of the Real Housewives franchise, The Shahs of Sunsetand and Australian swimwear model Natasha Oakley of A Bikini A Day all made an appearance. The swimwear section made more direct references to the "Rhapsody Road" theme, with models' wavy hair pulled back with flower crowns and floppy hats, accessorized with fringed, stacked heel booties; the overall effect was of a lazy summer trip through the Southwest, with some extremely intense pattern mixing, which somehow managed to feel both utterly organic and supergalactic, especially in a uniquely mellow shade of purple.
Our pick of the night? A gorgeous coral and gray one-piece with a corset-style back. It's enough to bring back the dream of an endless summer — even if the vibe is more pool oasis in the desert party than surfer-girl laidback cool.
