Loungewear Lust: Old Shanghai Robes

Posted by Bikini Owner in kimono robe, old shanghai

If you've flipped through a fashion magazine lately, you've no doubt caught a glimpse of one of the hottest street-style trends of the year: the kimono. Silky and sexy, taking the boudouir staple out of the bedroom and onto the street is a must-try for summer. Our favorite styles come from a new addition to The Wanderlust subscription box — Old Shanghai, a family-run business based in San Francisco. Sisters Renee and Tiffany Tam have been crafting hand-painted silk kimonos using centuries-old techniques and eastern handwork to create contemporary beauties that are as pretty at home as they are out for cocktails. We're excited to have Old Shanghai as a partner brand in The Wanderlust subscription box, as the brand makes a chic addition to our style lineup.

Not sure a kimono is a summer must? Just wait — our chat with the Tam sisters will have you ready to belt one on asap.

BIKINI: Wearing a robe or kimono seems to have fallen out of favor with modern women —  but they're so lovely! How do you help women understand that having one in their wardrobe is a necessity?

Tiffany Tam: Besides being super comfortable, when I wear a kimono it makes me feel beautiful, sexy and feminine. All women deserve to feel this way.

BIKINI: Can you describe the artistic process behind the patterns and motifs?

Renee Tam: For our hand painted kimonos, it takes seven days to make one piece. The outline is drawn first, and then a brush is used to color in each pattern by hand.

BIKINI: Do you both wear kimonos in your day-to-day life?

Renee Tam: Absolutely! Always when we're lounging around at home. I bring mine with me on vacation to wear it as a cover up at the beach, or I throw it on over a fitted dress with heels for a girl's night out.

BIKINI: Can you share some of your favorite styling tips?

Tiffany Tam: I love the easy, laid-back look of throwing a long floral kimono over a t-shirt with distressed jeans and a pair of sexy heels.
