A Brief History Of The Bikini

Posted by Bikini Owner

On July 5, 1946 Louis Reard unleashed the bikini on the world. The two-piece bathing suit was so scandalous that Reard had to hire an exotic dancer to model it — professional models refused to wear it, fearing for their careers.

68 years later we’re still celebrating the bikini, and we're quite okay with that. So in honor of our favorite beachwear, we present to you the history of the bikini in pictures.

1940’s: Dare to Bare
The first few years after its debut, the bikini was in a losing battle to the one piece.

1950’s: Ooh la la
Sex symbols like Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe bared it all in bikinis.

1960s: If you got it flaunt it
The Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini of 1960 was THE bikini of the ‘60s until Ursula Andress emerged from the water sporting the new low-rise sensation. Then Raquel Welch chimed in with her fur bikini in One Million Years BC, and that was all anyone could remember from the movie or pretty much ever since then.

1970's: Flower Power
The hippy movement influenced the swim world with floral and abstract patterns. Groovy.

1980's: Holy hip bone!
The ‘80s were synonymous with questionable hair choices and an above-the-hip style that they told us would lengthen legs. At least there are no shoulder pads in bikini land...

1990's: Minimalism
While Pamela Anderson stole the swimwear world’s eyes with her red "Baywatch" one-piece, the bikini was busy in Brazil getting smaller and smaller. And smaller.

2000's: Brazillian Beauty
The 2000s were filled with Brazilian supermodels like Giselle and Adrianna Lima. In 2003 the first fashion week dedicated to Swimwear took place in Miami. Brazilian models ruled all.

2010s: Globally Awesome
In 2011 Kate Upton was the first model to wear bikini in Antarctica. Then, in 2014, Sports Illustrated shot her in space (kind of). We're done here.
