The Best One-Piece for Every Body Type

Posted by Bikini Owner

Today, we welcome back our in-house expert, who'll be with us all season to guide readers through their swimwear dilemmas. Today's question:

Dear Bikini Whisperer,

I want to wear a one-piece, but I think I'm too short! Help!

The Bikini Whisperer responds:

This season, it’s all about the one-piece – and the best news is that there's one for everyone, no matter what your body shape is. One-pieces come in a huge array of silhouettes, prints and detail variations, all of which show off different body types to their best advantage. Read below to find your most flattering suit — and if you have a question for the Bikini Whisperer, send it here

Short torso one piece

Short torso: Opt for vertical lines that elongate your body type or draw attention, like this Boys and Arrows suit. Neckline details with an emphasis on a downward movement also complement this body shape — see Blue Life's lacy, deep V-neck or Acacia's halter with a plunging crochet opening.

short legs one piece

Short legs: High-cut leg openings are perfect for elongating your stems — the higher the design, the better! Norma Kamali's daring piece is meant to flatter this body type. Vertical stripes also trick the eye and lengthen your body shape — see Solid and Striped Anne Marie one-piece.

tummy control one piece

Tummy control: Neoprene fabrications hug and sculpt your silhouette – think of Spanx and apply the same concept to swimwear. This Zigilane one-piece is ideal and lends plenty of comfort.

long legs one piece

Long legs: Stay away from ultra high-cuts. Instead, choose a regular-cut bottom that sits at the hip. This Issa De' Mar suit also incorporates a busy print which draws attention to the torso.

waist defining one piece

Waist defining: If you seek to define the waist, choose suits that have front-knots at the waist or prints that pull the eye to the navel area – Mara Hoffman’s Starbasket one-piece is ideal. But Kore’s color block suit also complements a narrow waist, with a hue contrast that aligns at waist. Waist bands are great and cinch the torso where it is most needed — Moeva’s Sydney piece is a perfect choice.

Short body one piece

Short figure: Look for on-trend vertical lines. This Solid and Stripe tonal suit flatters and fits most petite figures.

Wide hips one piece

Wide hips: This Seafolly chevron motif is an excellent choice when minimizing hip size. The black and white lines give an optical illusion of narrower body lines.

big chest one piece

Large chest: Top-heavy shapes need extra support, and this Issa De’ Mar piece offers underwire and cup coverage that’s ideal fort this body type. Acacia’s mesh fabrication pulls and holds the body in place — plus the high neckline is perfect when playing in the water. For minimal coverage that holds, Mara Hoffman’s printed one-piece has a precise neckline that’s meant to flatter and sustain a larger chest.

small chest one piece

Small chest: Plunging necklines are meant to flaunt a small chest, so go for it with this Norma Kamali one-piece. Acacia’s low-cut, rounded V-neck and mesh fabrics pull breasts together. Gathers and triangle cut-outs that focus on the mid-section are also great details to incorporate – see Kore’s piece.

Large backside one piece

Large booty: if you seek coverage but still want to keep things sexy, find solid suits like these Seafolly and Water Glamour options that provide backside coverage.

Small booty one piece

Small booty: Issa De’ Mar’s Sao Paulo strappy, low-back one-piece showcases a petite derriere with a cheeky, high-curved booty silhouette.
