The Diet That Will Get You in Bikini Shape by Spring Break

       We are constantly hearing about these crazy fad diets-juice cleanses, gluten-free, cayenne pepper cleanse, and I'll admit, I have unsuccessfully tried a few. I recently wanted to lose a couple pounds I had gained during the fall and winter months. (Hey, I figured, totally acceptable to add some extra warmth to my body during this polar vortex, right?) As spring approaches, I decided it was time to kick it into high gear and get ready for skirt and bikini season! Here's what I did and why it worked.

       A few weeks ago, I tried on my white summer jeans and realized they were not fitting as well as I liked (i.e. they did not button). Instead of fruitlessly blaming the laundromat down the block for shrinking my jeans, I decided to amp up my fitness regime, change my diet and swore off late-night froyo runs to the Yogurtland for at least 10 days. I decided on a strict low-carb and low-sugar diet and lost the inches and couple extra pounds I wanted to lose. Post-diet I realized all the bad things I had been putting in my body. It finally seemed so clear as to how I lost the few pounds, but I decided to speak with holistic nutritionist and NAO Nutrition Founder, Nikki Ostrower, to confirm why my diet worked.

       Low-carb diets are effective because when you reduce carbohydrates, you are lowering the amount of sugar in your bloodstream. When there is less sugar in your bloodstream, there is less insulin. When your insulin levels drop, something called "Hormone=Sensitive Lipase" or "HSL" rises in your body, which reacts as a what Ostrower calls a "fat burning switch." In not so scientific terms, she says,

"When you consume less sugar, your body uses fat as an energy source rather than sugar. When your body uses fat as an energy source, you lose weight."

       Since most people have too much sugar in their bloodstream for HSL to be present, your diet shuts off this fat burning switch. Sugars trigger insulin production but Ostrower also let me know that common healthy foods such as, whole wheat bread, whole grain cereals do the same as well.

Here are some foods Ostrower recommends eating:

·       Lean proteins - fish, chicken

·       Vegetables - leafy greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts

·       Low sugar fruit - apple, pear, berries

·       Healthy fats - avocado, nut butter, olive oil, coconut oil, seeds

·       Whole Grains - quinoa, buckwheat, oatmeal

Acceptable sugars:

·       Stevia

·       Raw Honey

·       Grade A/B Maple Syrup

·       Coconut Sugar

       It is also important to drink plenty of lemon water between meals as lemon helps cleanse the body, detox the liver and eliminate sugar cravings! Remember, everyone's body is different so depending on the amount of weight you want to lose, the time it takes to lose the weight varies as well. The healthiest amount to lose in one week is two pounds. Have fun with it, and don't forget to choose a day for a splurge meal!
