30/60/90’s Kristi Molinaro Reveals Her Fitness Secrets

On our recent visit to NYC for Fashion Week, our local bikini-loving fitness friends were raving about the 30/60/90 class at the SoHo Equinox. Founder Kristi Molinaro's high-intensity interval training workout mixes short bursts of killer cardio with strength training recovery ab or weight exercises in place of actual breaks to give students a stellar physique. Obviously, we had to give it a try. Suffice it to say, we were sore for the remainder of our trip. Being around the bubbly Connecticut native, it’s easy to see why she’s become such a leader in the fitness world. We were determined to get her workout and wellness secrets. 

What gets you of bed on the days you just don’t feel like working out? 

I am a huge believer in the saying, "motivation follows action." It is a game-changing thought. A lot of people sit around waiting for "the spirit to move them," as my mom used to say. People who work out regularly are not necessarily more motivated than people who watch TV regularly. They often do not feel like going to the gym, but they go because they know the payoff is so worth it. I always say to myself and my clients, just get up and get out the door and start working out. If after 15 minutes you really don't want to do it, then stop. Nine times out of 10, the motivation will kick in. And when it doesn’t, then give yourself permission to do something else and let it go.

What’s the waste-of-time exercise everyone needs to stop doing ASAP? 

This could be a controversial topic, so I will tread lightly. Let me first say that I am a big believer that just getting off your couch and moving is better than nothing, but I do believe that going to the gym and bringing your magazine (or looking at Facebook) and hopping on the elliptical machine is as close to a waste of time as you can get. I honestly feel like going for a walk would be better, because at least it's a functional movement, you get some impact which is good for your bones, you get outside where you might actually connect with real people, and you can get somewhere.

What’s your favorite pre-workout snack? 

In NYC, we have a juice bar called Juice Generation, and I love most of their smoothies. I get the protein smoothie or the peanut butter one if I am preparing for an extra tough workout. 

Do you have a particular post-workout beauty regimen? 

I am actually pretty low-maintenance when it comes to this, or at least I think I am. I wear my hair up in a ponytail and constantly touch up my face during the day with Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and foundation. I am newly obsessed with eyelash extensions from Ebenezer in NYC, because it is so much easier to not wear mascara when you work out for a living.

What’s a good first step for someone who has never really tackled fitness before? 

Something is better than nothing. I advise people to just start by walking if you don't have a gym membership. I have a Jawbone, and I love to track my steps every day. I find myself walking so much more, just because I can see the steps adding up. If you do have a gym membership, I often recommend cycling classes, because the room is dark and you can just escape in a corner and no one knows how hard you're working. I do think it is important to do some kind of workout every day, even if it is just a brisk walk. It takes a few weeks of consistency to create a new habit. Once it has become part of your every day life, then you can start working some days off into the mix.
